Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A senior official commented the vandalism left him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
